I'm a little slow today. I just switched to Sanka. So...have a heart?

Fucking Fantastic.

Mike forwarded this to me. This video was shot a mere two and a half months before my bar mitzvah, November 20, 1993.

It's awesome.

A couple points:

1) Judging by the accents and the clothes, I'd say it's either a Philly Bar-Mitzvah, or a Pikesville/Owings Mills, MD Bar-Mitzvah. Possibly southern New Jersey, but I'm putting my money between Philly and Owings Mills - New Jersey would probably have had slightly more awful clothes. I think probably Philly (a rich Suburb like Narberth or in Lower Merion...that blue screen technology back then was only for fancy rich people.)

2) Adrienne - you had this at your Bat Mitzvah. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!

3) I didn't make a tape. Tears. I was too busy eating that sliced turkey breast that they served! Best EVER!

4) One of my favorite parts of this movie is when Nana gets gas and winces and rubs her tummy.

5) Also, the tone-deaf guy who's wearing a blue shirt, and the blue-screen cameras pick it up?! PRICELESS!

6) The amber-smoked aviators, sprayed hair, little pink bows, and suits from 1987? And drunken grandfather? All of them represented in my Bar-Mitzvah pictures as well.

In fact, there's probably a tape somewhere (there definitely is) from my Bar Mitzvah... almost exactly like this. Only the accents wouldn't be as constant - in mine there'll be Baltimorese drowning out Bostonian.

"All be oowen your sahd f'rever moooooore! Da's what friens arrr fore!"

First of all - I'm flattered you've picked this up for your blog. I've watched this 3 times all the way through now and it still makes me double over with laughter.

I love how not once during the 4+ minutes of song do they ever manage to get in time with the music.

My favorite character (and I believe the word "character" is appropriate here) is the woman on the far left in the red who has CRAZY EYES. She looks like she might be plotting to pull a knife out and take out Uncle Stevie.

I also urge you to spend one viewing only looking at the crazy background, which gives an impression of a sublime virtual reality future filled with rotating, color-changing geometric figures, which is how all computers look today.

At your bar mitzvah, did you have a photographer who printed your picture on a button? Or did you have one who put your face in a "Wanted" poster? I'm having a difficult time sorting through the various bar/bat-mitzvahs of our youth.

Besides just feeling pure embarassment for all of the "performers," and the bar mitzvah boy, it reminds me of my grandmother. She had glasses just like Nana's.

Mike - My pleasure!

I mean, it's not like these people didn't KNOW the song! They played it... everywhere? in 1993? I feel like between the years 1992-1994, "That's What Friends Are For" was piped through some universal Muzak speaker.

I also love Crazy-Eyes Susan with the pink bows. And I was paying attention to the futuristic space-age 3D graphics that were a portent of things to come. Heck, I telecommute to my office with a 3D helmet.

And sadly, we were not friends at Bar Mitzvah time - I didn't really know you.

I went to yours and Emily's, but for Emily, and went to Emily's Reception, not yours. Ergo, you were not at my Bar-Mitzvah. If you had been, you would remember I had a Caricaturist (tres hot back then) and gave out those rainbow light sticks which were the "it" Bar Mitzvah item when we had ours. Also, we pulled down my Balloon Arch over the head table and sucked helium from it until we (me) passed out. You'd remember that if you had been there.

Curlatini - The schadenfreude/shamefreude factor of the video is about a 9.5 out of 10.

Luckily, Seth was not in the Video, so I don't feel that bad for him.

I am sorry to leave this in your comments section. I failed to locate an email address.

I’m going around to all the South Florida bloggers/freelancers to let them know about our new books about the area: Historic Photos of Palm Beach County, the Historic Photos of Fort Lauderdale, and the Historic Photos of Greater Miami. We’d love to send you a complimentary copy for possible review consideration on your blog for one or all of these titles. The books are produced in a 10x10 large format and all images used are culled from several archives that represent rare or never before seen photos of the South Florida area. We’re trying to get the word out to local folks, so I hope you don’t mind me dropping you a line to let you know about our books!

There is an upcoming signing for Seth Bramson, author of the Historic Photos of Palm Beach County on April 7th at the Barnes & Noble on Legacy Avenue in Palm Beach Gardens at 7pm.

Hope to hear from you soon. Just email me your mailing address and I’ll get a copy out to you today.

If you have a copy of your caricature from your bar-mitzvah, I urge you to scan it and post it.

It's still hanging on a wall in your parent's house, right?

WRONG! It's rolled up on some bookshelves in my room at home, yellowing gently.

A of all, I still have the charicature from your Bar Mitzvah - ugh that awful dress i wore. At least I thin ki still have it...Bren & Al may have tossed it in the move along with all the other stuff I refuse to throw away.

B of all, No one has spoken about hilarious (and probably pretty frisky Grandpa Joe)?!!!! He's adorable and probably had 1 too many scotch & sodas, hold the soda as my grandmother always says.

C of all, Superbee, you have inspired me to bring my VHS of these videos from my bat mitzvah to work to convert to DVD and post to You Tube! That said, I'm pretty sure you're in at least one of the videos and did not just eat meat (insert laughter for the pun) all night.
