The very first animated cartoon is found here and it's called "The Humorous Phases of Funny Faces." Drawn in 1906, Thomas Edison was involved.

That was terrible. I do not subscribe to the doctrine that says that just because something is old, it is good. Thomas Edison just lost my respect.
